Phaselis Ancient City

Famous coastal town of ancient times, Phaselis Ancient City was founded as a colony by Rhodians in 690 B.C. due to its three ports, location and proximity to rich forest areas. Phaselis Ancient City which is located between pine and cedar forests in Olympos Beydağları National Park, is 16 km west of Kemer.

The ancient city which had been the most important port of the eastern coast of Lycia for many years, had three ports which were Northern Port, War Port and Sun Port. Columned port street connecting central port and southern port, theater leaning on a small hill on the sea side of the street, Roman bath, agoras, acropolis on the hill, aqueducts and Hadrian's Gate constructed in honor of Hadrianus's visit to the city are among the ruins of the ancient city worth seeing.

Ruled by Persians, Alexander the Great, Ptolemy and the Kingdom of Rhodes and dominated by the pirate Zeniketes for a while, the ancient city was added to Roman Empire by Marcus Junius Brutus in 42 B.C. and served as a bishopric center during the Byzantine period.
